My grandfather turned pens. My father turned pens (though he gave up turning when I was very young. I don't remember ever seeing him turn.) When my Dad gave me the lathe my Grandfather used to use, I just had to pick up the journey where they left it before me. Just like my other creations, I strive to make each piece "more than just a pen". I utilize exotic materials such as wood, bone, and antler-often layering them together to create striking designs that are as attractive as the pen is functional.
I have always loved pipes. I love the nostalgia they carry with them, as well as the style and class they represent. As an artist, I try to marry form and function to create usable pieces of art that serve more than one purpose. I work very hard to make pipes that are pleasing to they eye as much as they are a pleasure to smoke!
Bent and Canadian
One of my early pipes is this 1/2 bent pipe made from pecan grown right here in Carthage Missouri.
A later pipe is the long-shanked Canadian pipe. Its made from a wood called Madrone, also called strawberry wood. The stem is acrylic.
The Devil's Anse is a small pocket pipe. this one is made from Madrone with a Paduak shank extension and a yellow and orange acrylic stem.
The walnut utilized for the bowl of this pipe was grown right here in Carthage Missouri. The shank extension was made by a craftsman friend of mine for use in making pens. I fabricated and custom-fit the brass fittings and utilized a vulcanite stem.
This poker-style pipe is designed to be able to rest upright on the table when you're, say, playing poker. Carved from briar it's fitted with a hand-cut acrylic stem
The Copper Pot
This pipe is more on the artistic side-a big, round bowl fits wonderfully in the hand. The copper pipe functions as a cooling chamber for the smoke before it enters the stem. The bend in the stem in conjunction with the p-lip style bit allow the pipe to be held in the mouth comfortably for a smooth, cool smoke.
Custom Order Pipe
This pipe was ordered for Father's day. Designed to the customer's specifications, its made with a briar bowl and hand-cut acrylic stem.
Pipe and Pen Sets
A true gentleman (or lady) should have and carry with them two things: a pipe that reflects their personality and smoking preferences, and a nice pen. So why not make them match? These sets can be made to order. They display a quality of refinement and class- complementing each other nicely. The pipe is made from briar with a maple insert and hand-cut acrylic stem. the shank of the briar is hollow, allowing the smoke to cool before entering the mouth.
